Here are my TOP TEN tips for your upcoming beauty shoot. Try to check these off and bring more than you think you'll need. We'll pair together when you get here.
#1) For a slimmer look, form fitting is definitely best. Women, look for figure-hugging clothes.
#2) Think textures. Textures like lace, ruffles, and ruching add interest. Look for interesting textured tops. Avoid wild patterns as they may detract from your face.
#3) Bring a variety of colors-- something light (ivory, nude, pastel), something dark (black or gray is great), something with a pop of color (something that makes your eyes pop is best.) If we'll be doing together shots, the easiest way to pull this off is to get you all in similar tones. One look could be light neutrals. Another look could be darker tones. And a third look could be colorful (maybe shades of earth tones, jewel tones, pastels-- whatever you feel suits you best.) It's best to keep 3-4 choices of colors, so some options might be blue, grey, and a pop of yellow on scarves, a shirt, or jewelry, for example.
#4) Look for layers. Ladies, add a form-fitting jacket, slim fit knit cardigan, or scarf in coordinating colors to cover and slim your arms. Men, layer collared shirts with a form-fitting jacket, vest, or pullover knit sweater and don't forget to bring coordinating ties, if we're adding in a more formal look.
#5) Look for the necklines and sleeve lengths that flatter you. For sleeve lengths, 3/4 sleeves are generally flattering and slimming. Sleeveless is great on thinner or toned arms or pair with layers to slim arms.
#6) Bring or wear jewelry that speaks to your style. If you have a lot, bring it! Accessories add so much to your images; silky scarves and robes, hair accessories, big belts, lace gloves...You never know what we'll use for your shoot!
#7) Come with clean, manicured nails. Hands come into frame a lot with headshots. Polish your rings too if you wish.
#8) A professional hair and makeup artist will spend about an hour to helping you look and feel your best. Please come with a fresh face (no makeup, but well moisturized). Arrive with your hair dried (preferably wash it the night before) do not use a flat iron or any kind of styling tools or product prior to your shoot. If you have any clip in hair extensions please bring them along with any hair accessories you have. Any waxing, coloring, or dramatic changes should happen well before the shoot. I will check with you during this time to see how you feel about your hair and makeup. It is very important that you bring up any concerns that you may have. Keep in mind that makeup can tend to be a bit washed in camera so we add just a touch more to compensate. We will generally use false eyelashes if you're comfortable with that. I love using these as they give a natural look and really make the eyes pop without having a lot of makeup and shading applied. If you aren't comfortable in false eyelashes, they can be applied in photoshop afterwards (crazy, huh?)
#9) For examples, please check out my Pinterest board with looks gathered from the internet. This is a secret board where other women who've had their sessions have posted what appealed to them. Feel free to add your inspiration as well as comments as to what it is that appeals to you (her hair, clothing, pose, location, etc) Use this as a springboard for ideas to bring up during our wardrobe consultation and/or when you're shopping.
#10) Get ready for fun! Looking forward to meeting you and bringing out your best!
Please let us know if you have any questions, we can't wait for your shoot!
What a fun and craazyyy day! I can't believe everything we fit into this day and still came out with such beautiful images! Sam is one busy busy momma! She had an appt in the morning, her daughter's 5 year birthday party, hair and makeup session, family photo shoot (minus hubby, as this was a surprise for him!), a beauty shoot (part of her surprise for hubby), and then a party in the evening. She pulled it all off, of course, being the superwoman she is. We were even able to hide the fact that one of her poor sweeties was super sick and feeling horrible. Can you tell which one? She must be like her mom, and able to push through and get things done, no matter what. All this, and we were able to get all of her products to her before the next weekend after her shoot! What a gorgeous model! Thank you to Charity Fales for the beautiful makeover; beautiful job!
I love the message she sent saying how much her husband loved the images, he was completely surprised and blown away. What a compliment, coming from her husband, who is an extremely talented photographer himself.
So this was a fun craaazy day! Sam and I decided to really test ourselves as superwomen on this day. She had mom duties she didn't want to interrupt of kids swimming lessons, an appointment, a birthday party for 6 adorable little girls, and a get together later that night. No problem to wiggle in a couple of photo shoots into her day, right?? Haha! We pulled it off, getting a glamour shoot, a family shoot, and a little mini shoot for her daughter in, not to mention that we also did mini photo shoots and video for the birthday party. And the sad fact that one of her daughters Grace, also got sick, which was super sad because she missed a good portion of the fun at the birthday and you can imagine how she felt about posing for family pictures, poor thing! Normally I strongly suggest using this shoot as a time to slow down, pamper yourself, and get in touch with your beautiful feminine side with a low key evening out with your sweetheart, but I'm pretty dang proud that we juggled it all and got such beautiful photos of Sam and her kids to give her husband on Father's Day just a week later. And isn't that just so typical of a mom and wife, trying to fit it all in and totally knocking it all off her list?! I love that she reported back how choked up he got when he saw the photos (well, yes, I can see that....he has a beautiful family and obviously knows how blessed he is!). He is an extremely talented photographer, so that means even more to me. Big thank you to Charity Fales, Hair and Makeup Artist. First time working with her and didn't she do a great job?! And if you're curious about the party, (or ever in the need for a carefree pampering princess party for the mini you in your life), check out the video of Parlez Vous Parties that made her daughter's birthday party so carefree that she was able to accomplish so many other things that day. Here's the FB Page if you're interested in having a beautiful fairy garden birthday party for your princess.
Meet Becky, She is smart, sweet, beautiful, and puts everyone else before herself. I think we're ready for another day of fun and pampering. I would call it glamour, but I'm not sure if that conveys memories of corny feather boas, upturned denim collars, and soft angelic glowing heads. Stay tuned for a do-over of the video.
So hard to believe this beautiful woman was a beautiful little girl not so long ago and now it's her turn to be a mom and love the little one who will be looking up to her...
I have yet to write about my wonderful experience shooting this amazing woman. You'll want to read and learn more about her and her journey. I know I have really loved most of my clients, but this experience of getting to know Stephanie and her story goes way beyond any shoot I could have imagined. I am so glad we decided to hire a videographer to document this beautiful day. Thank you for the beautiful work, Hannah, of Hannah Elizabeth Imagery.
This is what Stephanie sent me, explaining what she's battling:
"I wanted to provide some background information on the type of cancer I have and correct my timeline. I was diagnosed 18 months ago and when I was diagnosed I was told I would have 9 to 18 months. That is a best guess from doctors as each person is different. My cancer is Glioblastoma Stage IV.
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), "glioblastoma", is the most common and most aggressive malignant primary brain tumor in humans, involving glial cellsand accounting for 52% of all functional tissue brain tumor cases and 20% of all intracranial tumors. GBM is rare, with incidence of 2–3 cases per 100,000 in Europe and North America.
Treatment can involve chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Median survival with standard-of-care radiation and chemotherapy with temozolomide is 15 months. Median survival without treatment is 4½ months."
So, what does a person do when they get news like this? Stephanie would love to be able to share her story and reach as many people aspossible, getting the word out and encouragement of the much needed support and awareness that goes with news most of us can barely imagine. For me, that involved doing a totally fun and fabulous photo shoot. Meghan Cozine at the MAC store at the Boise Mall wanted to make Stephanie look and feel gorgeous and confident for her shoot and donated all her time and materials, even assisting during the entire shoot. Meghan, you were a wonderful godsend and so awesome to work with! Monica at Dresstravaganza at the Boise Outlet Mall offered to let Stephanie use their wardrobe pieces and have fun with them! My sweet friend Gretchen LaPointe, who manages the horse stables and gives riding lessons near Hidden Springs offered to share the studly Arabian Navarre to join Steph in some of her shoot. I knew this would be a great opportunity to get some video footage, so I asked Steph what she thought. She loved the idea and so we went ahead and hired on Hannah to join in the fun. She has also interviewed Stephanie and so there is a hope that footage will be added to the following video.
Thank you everyone who offered your generosity and support to help us put this together!
And for the rest of you, would you like to hear more? Please comment below to show and share the love and support for Stephanie and let's start a wave of promoting awareness for ALL battling any cancers!!

This is Rachel. I absolutely loved this shoot. Everything came together so well and we were able to create some gorgeous images. I am so over the top with this shoot, that I have had a really hard time choosing my favorites. Why was this shoot so awesome?? Several reasons, aside from the fact that Rachel is obviously a naturally gorgeous woman. But that's not what makes a successful shoot. First, we consulted with eachother about what Rachel envisioned. That can be hard to determine if you haven't had one of these sessions before! I had some ideas and I have a Pinterest board where Rachel and I were able to pin, view, and comment on ideas we were both seeing and getting inspiration from. That gets the ball rolling in getting excited and creative about the shoot. We start thinking about wardrobe, hair, makeup, posing, locations, etc. Rachel came with alot ALOT of clothes and accessories. I love that! I also have a wardrobe for clients to borrow from. We started pulling together the looks we've already decided on with some more options for last minute ideas. Together, we had more than enough clothes and accessories to give her some variety with different looks. I love the texture of the sweater with a natural and neutral look. Rachel looks stunning in her red dress. My red lipstick was a must for this look as well as giving her a more dramatic look for the rest of her makeup. The gold dress was also pulled from the studio wardrobe. I love this elegant look how the color/tones work for her. We had so much more than we needed, but we kept shooting and changing until time ran out. Rachel was prepared and we knew what we wanted to achieve which made for a much more confident shoot. It didn't take her long to relax and trust me. I give a lot of specific direction on posing. A slight lean or change in a pose can truly subtract at least 10 pounds and completely alter an image. It is not necessary to use a lot of makeup, props, or photoshop if you are being properly directed. My goal is to make each woman look gorgeous like they truly are. I focus on accentuating your positives and diminishing qualities that aren't as flattering in camera. This means you are getting images that reflect YOU, not a super photoshopped version. After the shoot, I touch up minor imperfections and color corrections. I quite often brighten eyes and teeth as well. When makeup hair and posing are nailed, this last step is quite minimal. Rachel should be getting her prints any day. I am thrilled she was so happy with them, and what I love the most is that her family will have these images for generations. She has photos she feels confident and beautiful in. She will exist in these images for her children for many many years. I don't know why, but somewhere in the last generation or so, we stopped getting our portraits taken sometime after our senior photos. These are my absolute favorite shoots. I am not transforming women, I am simply using a camera to mirror what women quite often don't take the time to see in themselves. I hope you enjoy Rachel's 'before' natural beauty shot and her modern magazine styled glam session. _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ ________ _______ ________ ________ ________ ________ __________ ___________ _____________ ______________ _______________ ________________ ________________ _____________ ______________ _____________ ______________ _____________
